REAL Devil [devil] Re: Yay Sweden!

How many of those are agnostics ? Agnosticism - an intellectual position that I believe you once described as viler than that of christian fundamentalism.

Yeah, but do a similar poll gauging support of government as an instutition and Sweden would be one of the highest.

I myself would rather live in a more socialist non-imperialist country than a more 'free market' imperialist one, but that's just me.

In my experience, it is easier to talk someone out of govt than god.

Do you mean about agnosticism? I assume so -- well, I think that most people who call themselves "agnostics" do not hold it as a well-researched and knowledgeable philosophical position, but rather it is a way for them to avoid getting into the debate - in general, and in common usage, the word "agnostic" means more or less "indifferent."

Now, those who have studied religion and philosophy, and who maintain agnosticism in the face of rational and scientific questions from strong atheists, those are quite another breed entirely...Surprise

I've been an atheist since I was 8 or 9 years old. But I *always* told people I was "agnostic", just to avoid the confrontations. Particularly with my parents. They tolerated my agnosticism. They would NEVER have stood for my atheism. I could answer "I don't know" to "is there a god", and my dad could finish the thought with, "that's why we have faith".

It's just what I had to do, to survive.

I would have to say that I think David MacGregor agrees with you, Stef.

EDIT: oops this the one I was looking for, though that last one wasn't bad, either.

There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't.

Yes, I spent a few weeks doing business in China in 2000 - after spending a few weeks in Morocco on vacation, which was quite a transition - and I found them to be fairly unsophisticated (a lot of drinking at lunchtime), but energetically enthusiastic! The ghastly traumas of the hardcore communist years seem to have given them a deep thirst for life.

The wonderful thing about visiting other cultures is the degree to which it erodes your confidence in the 'truisms' of your own culture...
