Do you find this tactic works well for you, generally speaking? Labeling your debate partner as mentally ill?

Of course direct evidence will trump all logic, however the probability of a self-contradictory entity doing anything anytime soon that can only be attributed to a higher power is very slim to none.

Hell, I'd convert the very second someone showed me some empirical evidence. Maybe you should check out Stefan's podcasts on Agnosticism giinocto.

Notice that Stef never says the people who believe in god are schizophrenic or otherwise grievously mentally ill. His technique seems to work better.

Just wanted to point out that a lot of schizophrenic people DO believe in "God", the bad processing in parts of their brain actually gives them sensory input they really didn't experience and so they speak to god, the devil, celebrities, etc. Plus I have been told by one that he hoped he got another chance at life without a hell. Talk about your Cartesean demon experience!

I'm not sure where I heard this, but this reminds me that I once read some article or something like that saying that one of the reasons schizophrenia is still around is that the existence of religion gives those with schizophrenia a survival advantage. That is, since schizophrenics are likely to hear voices, have visions, and for some reason are quite likely to be geniuses, and all of these things are not infrequently considered not malfunctions but signs of "holiness", where schizophrenic genes might otherwise be weeded out by cultural selection they are instead positively selected for.
