I don't support the war AND I don't support the troops

Whenever I talk to people about the Iraq war, many people will agree the war is bad, but will always have the same bullshit follow up question "Oh! but you support the troops don't you?!?". Well, my honest answer is.....no, I don't support the troops. What does "support" mean exactly? Do I support what they are doing? No.....Do I want to support them monetarily? No.... So what is there to support? Bringing them back home? Is that it?

I've heard even many libertarians use this same bullshit follow up statement when talking about iraq. I understand they are enslaved, but they chose to join the miliary, and part of the military is killing. Murder is murder, "our troops" are no differant. So fuck those ribbons people put on their cars. I don't support the war, and I don't support the troops!

Yeah -- a great question is, "What does it mean to support the troops?"  I haven't tried it out yet, but I think I'm going to next time someone throws it at me.

I think they are immersed in a false mythology that these troops signed up with the intention of "protecting our freedom". They believe that in the big picture, the military protects us, even though a particular operation might not be a good idea.

You could certainly tell them that you support the troops too. The government confiscated half your paycheck to fund them, yes?

    "i support the troops too.
    do i want to? no."

i think 'supporting the troops' is really supporting the individuals within the uniforms,
not the funding they get to stay in that hell hole,
    but the men themselves.

as far as i'm aware, a sign of support isn't funding somebody's risk of death,
or advocating it in any way.
supporting the troops is supporting the end to the war.

I find their word "support" to be amusing.

What if we "supported" Stef in the same way these people "support" the troops, in that all we did was walk around saying "I support Stef"? The free advertisement aside, I think he would rather have some donations.

The military today, and probably always, has been a tool to promote policy; specifically foreign policy.  America's foreign policy has done nothing but put average people in danger (well, getting killed by terrorists is less likely than one of several other horrible ends: shark, hippo, crocodile, or snake attack; lightning strike; falling into a wood chipper; etc.) but an aggressive foreign policy is sold as "defense."  Then, when "blowback" inevitably occurrs, there is the inevitable "A ha! I told you so! Give us guns and your young!"  "Defense" is a self-fulfilling prophecy, like trying to destroy a hornet's nest for fear the hornet's within will one day attack you and you will cause them to attack you and then you have circuitously rationalized your attack.

Here's an idea:  Ask them to provide a more concrete substitute for "support", and see what you get...

People employ this double-think in America so consistently (an inconsistent consistency?)
    that the 1984 Prophecy,
in many ways, is already fulfilled.

Heh, yeah, Bush is pretty bad.  What does it mean to support the troops?  Can you put that another way?  It's one of those things people say (I used to say it too), but I've always kinda wondered what it meant.

I think of the troops as the gun(s) the government points at the rest of the world. And the police as the one pointed at us. So... I support the gun if it's pointed at someone trying to hurt me, but so rare is it that is the case that supporting the troops seems like a waste of breath. Whew, long sentence.

I realize this is kind of a strange question, but in what way do you support the troops?  Also, what characteristics or behaviors do soldiers display that you support?

I support them by being grateful they're there. But right now I wish they weren't where they are. As Anne said I'd support them if they were attacking someone who was trying to hurt me. But Osama and That other Guy (can't remember name. Think... THINK) are dead. At least I think the other guy is dead. Oooooohhhhhh. I'm so confused.

What does it mean to say you don't support organized murder, but you support the assassin's(although i do feel some sympathy for them, many have come from a background of religious, state, and family torture with no hope and no way out)
