Welfare, Incentives, and Working at Target

A friend of mine is working as a manager of a Target store while finishing his MBA and he recently told me this sad/funny story.  Most of his employees make a few dollars over minimum wage for doing fairly basic, low-skilled jobs. He has to continually remind them to do their daily tasks and generally baby-sit them.  A few weeks ago he asks this one woman to do something for the third time and she turned around and snapped her fingers at him and said "This is BULLSHIT! I don't even have to be here.  I can leave here get da welfare tomorrow if want to!"

Oh it hurts my soul.  Sad thing is, he did the math and said she was actually losing money by working at Target as opposed to the monthly welfare check she could be getting.  I just have to laugh when I hear stories like this.  Otherwise I would cry.

It's the nature of the beast we're facing today... but what I wonder is, is the woman trying to threaten him or something?  I'd be like, please, go!  Take your welfare check!  I don't need that kind of attitude!

Then again, I'm not the manager of a Target and finding a replacement would probably be difficult given the quality of labor at that rate of pay.  My condolences to your friend--it can't be easy.

I don't what she was trying to do with the remark...it shows how corrosive such programs are to the human mind.

We had a number of those types when I worked at the movie theatre during high school and college.  They never lasted and didnt make any contribution.  They were always the people holding the rest of us back.  Granted since I was a supervisor, I simply swapped them out for willing volunteers from the people that clean the theatres when I was running a concession stand..simply because I was very efficient and we were done early in the evening.  Those people will find their own level, and someone with too much money and not enough sense will try to make you feel bad for not caring.

Definetly know how you feel there. It's really sad how the government has given the poor the power to steal without recourse. The government see's a problem with poor people stealing, their solution is to make it legal for poor people to steal a certain amount of money, thats just hilarious.

That is messed up beyond belief...

I call for a truce with the Anarchist Left. Stef is a very intelligent man and a man of great virtue. We are all brothers and sisters, we should act like it. I love you all.

Scott, since this is an anarchist forum, and you are a guest, would you mind removing the association you have with anarchism and totalitarianism in your signature?

    Thanks!

Am I the only person here who (anecdote above besides) thinks the welfare state to be one of the most hopeful developments of democracy? I personally view our welfare state in Britain with enormous affection, especially after we went through years of joblessness under Thatcher. Surely it ranks up there with free health care?

     Heck no!!

The welfare state is based upon taxation, which equates with force.  Free health care is bad too, for the same reasons.

Read up on libertarianism and market anarchism.  It seems you don't understand the views of the people on this forum.
