    A friend engineering war

I had been chatting with a friend for about ten minutes about his search for an engineering job and then it took a dive I didn't see coming

    ...

Shack (5:12:52 PM): nice.  The communication on this seems iffy
steve (5:13:34 PM): ya, pretty much
steve (5:13:54 PM): thats why i'm not really holding my breath on it anymore
Shack (5:14:46 PM): so are you leaning towards any particular industry?
Shack (5:14:59 PM): or just anything that sounds good
steve (5:15:08 PM): eh, i want to do product design
steve (5:15:15 PM): some of the defense contractors are somewhat appealing
steve (5:15:22 PM): cause they build crazy shit and have huge budgets
steve (5:15:27 PM): i applied for a bunch of positions with raytheon
Shack (5:15:34 PM): defense as in weapons?
steve (5:15:46 PM): sorta, but that includes a lot of other stuff
steve (5:16:17 PM): like fighter jets, or raytheon is working on this thing thats like a mini robot skeleton you wear around that makes you almost like a mini mechwarrior and shit
Shack (5:16:49 PM): have you thought about what it would mean to be working for a company like that?
Shack (5:17:30 PM): They develope equipment that is designed to kill people.
steve (5:17:56 PM): i dont' give a fuck
steve (5:18:15 PM): in that same sense you could say you're developing shit to save people too
steve (5:18:33 PM): i mean, if you make a new armor system for a solider...nobody dies
Shack (5:20:58 PM): I have to disagree, all of those things are devices of war.  War is about murdering people to get what you want.  So even body armor would be supporting war, supporting murdering people.
steve (5:21:17 PM): well then i guess i'm ok with that
Shack (5:21:55 PM): surprised to hear you say that
steve signed off at 5:35:35 PM

I think "surprised to hear you say that" would be more accurately translated into "I wish you didn't feel that way."  I wasn't really that surprised.  This is one of my friends which deep conversations never come to topic.  Over the last year it has really come to my attention that many of my friends are just based on common interests and not values.  Because of FDR my sense of values has been changing rapidly and situations like this become tough for me.

How would you/do you react to similar situations?

This same sort of thing happened to me.

Some time last november my brothers and I would talk about the war. We'd eventually end up saying how stupid it was and how dumb it was that people wanted to continue it. Anyways, long story short. My big brother eventually ended up joining the military but when I heard that he was joing I didn't say anything at all. My parents and extended family, for the most part, really supported him and I decided to just sit back. I don't know if that was the right thing to do but he is off in training now. Tongue Tied

Ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!!! You can have a certain degree of leeway with people who support the military, but with someone who has been so heavily corrupted that they dont even get that murder is wrong your not going to have a whole lot of luck.

To me, it is shocking and heartbreaking...
