If There's A Dragon, I'll Eat My Shoes (fdr inspired kids' story)

If There's A Dragon, I'll Eat My Shoes

    By David Kopp

Luke was walking to school.  He was almost there when he saw a dragon hide behind the gym.  When he got into the classroom he told his teacher.

“Mrs. Anderson, there’s a dragon behind the gym.”  Mrs. Anderson just laughed, which made the rest of the class laugh.

“If there’s a dragon,” said Mrs. Anderson, “I’ll eat my shoes.”

After the spelling test was silent reading.  Luke turned around to Ryan who was reading about pirates. “Ryan, there’s a dragon behind the gym.”

Ryan laughed out loud and said, “If there’s a dragon, I’ll eat my shoes.”

Mrs. Anderson heard Ryan, everyone did.  She sent Luke to see the principal. Luke was terrified.  He’d never had to see the principal before. The principal was not pleased to see him and when Luke told him there was a dragon behind the gym, it only got worse.  Luke’s parents were called and soon they all stood in the principal’s office.

Luke said it again, this time he was also a bit mad.  “I am telling you, there is a dragon behind the gym.”

“If there’s a dragon,” Luke’s mom, Luke’s dad, and the principal all said in unison, “I will eat my shoes.”

“Fine,” Luke said, at least eight times for mad than before, “I will show you.”

Luke ran down the hallways of the school, knocking on all the doors.  “I will show you all!”

Within minutes the entire school was standing in the field.

Everyone looked at Luke and said, “If there is a dragon, I’ll eat my shoes.”

They all marched to the back of the school and around to the back of the gym... and there was the dragon.

“See,” said Luke, “I told you there was a dragon.”

Everyone stood silent for few seconds, and then the principal announced, “I don’t see a dragon.”

Everyone looked at the principal then at each other, and said, “I don’t see a dragon either.”

But it was clear from the pale looks on their faces and the way that their knees all knocked together that there was indeed a dragon. But nobody wanted to admit they were wrong and NOBODY wanted to eat their shoes.  But that didn’t matter anyways because the Dragon ate them all up

    … and left the shoes.

    The End.

Hey David, do I have your permission to repost this on my blog? I very much enjoyed reading it and have been trying to collect rational/educational things for kids.

Of course you can.  Anyone can post my stuff, as long as you just credit me for writing it.   Thanks.

Love it. And I bet while the dragon was eating them they would have said: " I don't feel anything!"

    Cool story!  Yes

I'm teacher-assistant for the time being for 6-8 year olds at a summer camp, and the theme for the camp is "The Little Dragon," so the story-time books tend to be dragon stories

If you don't mind, I'd love to read this story to the kids during story time!
