Wild West, Mad Max and distopia movies

I think this would be an interesting subject. Why are these movies made? A lot of them are great, but we all know they're just not true.

Well, why are any movies being made?  I can think of a few reasons: for money, for the love of the art, propaganda.

As for the trueness issue, I'd be hard pressed to find a movie that was true.  Still, we find them entertaining, and we can occasionally find movies that get us to think and/or inspire us.

I'm curious; why do you ask?

Well, of course they make money, but I'm talking about something that runs deeper... and I mean it must have something to with what target audiences want to see. Is it the case that people would hate a movie about the Old West where there are peaceful relations amongst peoples? Would they not appreciate a movie where the end of governments is somewhat ok for mankind, instead of a free ticket to wear mohawks and rape everyone?

I do believe a lot of people want to be comforted in believing that their excuses for statism are true. For instance, I was once talking with a statist about movies, and Gangs of New York came up in the conversation. I said, "it's a good movie, but it's kind of ridiculous... people don't get into massive violent fights like that for such silly reasons (control the Five Points)". The statist was shocked that I would doubt the veracity of the story, and I ended up finding out that the real Five Points was nowhere near the violence portrayed in the movie. It is my understanding that the statist believed it was genuine because it is compatible with the hobbesian view of what Man is like in the absence of state power.

Brokeback Mountain, anyone? Though to be fair, I haven't seen it. It has some violence in it, I hear. Even if if didn't, I'm not really sure that people would make the connection that the Wild West wasn't too terribly wild. It was a commerical success, though.

The only change I can believe in is in my piggy bank. Oh, wait, that's fiat money. Never mind.
