Well, of course they make money, but I'm talking about something that runs deeper... and I mean it must have something to with what target audiences want to see. Is it the case that people would hate a movie about the Old West where there are peaceful relations amongst peoples? Would they not appreciate a movie where the end of governments is somewhat ok for mankind, instead of a free ticket to wear mohawks and rape everyone?
I do believe a lot of people want to be comforted in believing that their excuses for statism are true. For instance, I was once talking with a statist about movies, and Gangs of New York came up in the conversation. I said, "it's a good movie, but it's kind of ridiculous... people don't get into massive violent fights like that for such silly reasons (control the Five Points)". The statist was shocked that I would doubt the veracity of the story, and I ended up finding out that the real Five Points was nowhere near the violence portrayed in the movie. It is my understanding that the statist believed it was genuine because it is compatible with the hobbesian view of what Man is like in the absence of state power.
