    The Golden Compass

I'm sure many of you have heard of this movie.
It was origanally the first book in a trilogy.
They were written by a British atheist.
Much of the material is anti-religious, and specifically anti-Catholic.

I can't wait to read it and see it.

I love this series, I just got done with the Golden Compass and I'm now on the next book (The Subtle Knife).  I love how he depicts Christianity as tearing apart the souls of children, metaphorically via their "demons".  I suspect this guy is also an anarchist just based on a few hints from the Texan guy.  The next book relaxed my need to suspend disbelief, I won't say why and spoil it but it's pretty cool and involves quantum mechanics I'm guessing.

The audiobooks are great, it has plenty of actors for the numerous voices.

I'm almost to the middle of the last book the Amber Spyglass and I am bounding through these books like there's no tomorrow. There were a few lines in this last book and the first book as well that gave plenty of hints that he's definitely a minarchist if not an anarchist.

I think he is definitely an atheist but the way he incorporates the Christian mythology is exhilarating because, and I won't say too much here to spoil it but I love how he takes the side of "Satan" which is why Christians are in such an uproar about it I think.  It really makes me want to find the author and buy him an expensive dinner.  The way he weaves quantum mechanics, dark matter and other science into the trilogy is most brilliant.  The setting in the first book might throw you off a little though (suspend disbelief) but it will make a whole lot more sense (in plausibility) in the second one (The Subtle Knife).

The guy really seems to incorporate psychology into this as well.  I see that he at least has an understanding of the child's experience and I keep getting these hints that he "gets" the mythology of family as well.  He must've read some Alice Miller or something.

We should find him and invite him to FDR.

Edit: Man, I'm gonna be really sad when I'm done with this last book, this story has been so amazing and will pale in comparison to any book I read/listen to after this.

    Re: The Golden Compass

I read the first two back in grade school but never got around to reading The Amber Spyglass. I freaked out when I saw the movie promo. I'm going to have to read the whole series now starting at the beginning.

I agree we should find out how to send him some of Stef's stuff.

I was very disappointed by the ending of the last book.  After everything settles down, he enforces a grimly masochistic ending on his main characters out of altruism.  Other things in the later part of the series really gave me a disturbing vibe of using morality to dominate and oppress.

Sorry, never mind, I just finished the book and I guess I thought you had given something away.   Actually the ending sounded undeniably like this entire conversation here at FDR, I thought it was a pretty damn good ending.  I didn't see anything altruistic about it and nothing dominating and oppressing either, in fact just the opposite, so I'm not sure what you mean specifically but we probably don't want to give away any spoilers on this thread.

My friend and I saw the movie and we both loved it.  You guys have gotten me all excited to read the books now.  I'm a poor college student so I can't afford them right now.  I'll have to have to ask my parents for them for Christmas Big Smile
